Trump Moves to Have Guns Protected as People
President Donald Trump said today that he has directed his attorney general to propose changes to the American constitution which would grant firearms and ammunition the same rights as U.S. citizens. This move would protect ownership of “bump stocks” and other auxiliary mechanisms with second amendment protection for guns themselves.
Similar to “corporate personhood” established through a loose interpretation of the 14th Amendment where the word “person” is not clearly defined, certain constitutional protections could be extended to firearms under the president’s proposal. “We need to ensure that our citizens, law enforcement and public school teachers can protect themselves with firearms and those firearms can in turn be protected with the same protection” said Trump. “We need to make sure that the right to bear arms is not compromised and the right for those arms to bear arms is the only way to ensure that American citizens can continue to protect themselves" Under the proposal guns themselves accountable for crimes committed with guns.
Richard Vergas of Coaltion Against Violence said “Second amendment rights for guns is ridiculous. If guns are people are they now to pay taxes? Are they all individually registered for the draft?”
Trump ensures gun owners that only 2nd, 4th, 13th, and 14th amendment rights will be extended to guns. They will not be protected from “All that court stuff nobody cares about” as the president put it. The measure will effectively increase the U.S. population by 114%.
